One of the suggestions made to me during my visits to my Naturopath was to not drink anything during a meal; wait 30-45 minutes and then go to town. Why? Well, the way that it was explained to me (or at least, the way I remember it), when you eat your gastric juices get going and drop the ph in your stomach down, which is ideal for digestion. When you quaff a measure of water with a ph of around 7 guess what? The ph in your stomach increases and digestion becomes less efficient. I don't have any scientific evidence kicking around that house that backs this claim up but it does make sense. I implemented this change around the same time that I modified my diet so it is difficult to tell what sort of impact that it had but I can say that when following the diet and avoiding drinking with a full stomach I feel much much better.
